PUBLIC WORKS NEWS

ANNUAL CITY WATER QUALITY REPORT:  Citizens can find the report on our website,  view or pick up a copy at city hall or see it  posted in the post office.

TREE TRIMMING:

The city will be trimming trees on the roads and  in the alleys to make access easier for  emergency and city vehicles to pass through.  Please do not have any items or waste in the  alleys. If you do not want the city trimming any  of your trees or bushes, please have them  trimmed back from the alleys and roads  beforehand. Tree branches must be trimmed  up from the ground to a height of 12 feet.  Bushes along roads must be trimmed down to a  height of no more than 3 feet.

SPRINKLER SYSTEMS: If you didn’t have a test on  your sprinkler system backflow preventer done  last year, please have one done this year and  mail your report to City Hall. This is necessary to  ensure that contamination of the water supply  will not happen in the event of a pressure loss  to the water system. Thank you to those that  have already brought in test results.

SEWAGE PROBLEMS: Our city insurance  provider has asked us to remind all citizens, “…  of the importance of NOT flushing flushable  wipes, sanitizer wipes, paper towels or anything  else that isn’t toilet paper.” Please help us  prevent sewer backups by disposing of these  items in some other way.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

COMMUNITY BREAKFAST & SUGAR DAYS CELEBRATION: We are sorry

to inform you that the events have been cancelled due to council’s

COVID 19 concerns. We look forward to a great event next year.

HOLIDAY GARBAGE PICKUP: Because Independence Day is on

Saturday this year; garbage pickup will not be affected. Pickup will

remain on Friday.

CITY CLEANUP SURVEYS: Thanks to those that participated in the City Cleanup Survey. City Council will  be deciding how to move forward concerning city cleanup in the near future. We had 138 surveys  returned. Approximately three-fourths of survey replies wanted at least one cleanup and at least one

dumpster. (If only 1 cleanup, the majority preferred cleanup in the fall.) Results: 1. No cleanup – 24%, 1 cleanup – 34%, 2 cleanups – 42%

  1. No dumpster – 25%, 1 dumpster – 55%, 2 dumpsters – 20%

NO DUMPING OF YARD WASTE OR ITEMS IN CITY: Dumping at the end of streets or in alleys is not  allowed. City Code 3-1-8: “Responsibility for Disposal: A: Owners: No person shall deposit refuse on or  below the surface of the ground other than in a manner prescribed in this chapter. No person shall  deposit or bury any refuse in or upon a public alley, street, other public area or upon the premises of  another person, whether or not the refuse is in an approved container. No refuse of any kind shall be  thrown, swept or pushed into the street in front of any premises. The owner of the premises shall be  responsible for the disposal of all such refuse.” Please remove any items or waste from public alleys to  avoid health and safety hazards and possible citations.

BURNING WITHIN THE CITY: County guidelines must be followed. You can register and read regulations  for burning at the following website: http://fdmadison.org/.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO REDUCE YOUR WATER BILL, HERE IS A SUGGESTED WATERING TIP: According to  research from Utah State University in Logan, Utah, lawns don’t require as much water as many of us  are giving them. Lawns should receive ½ inch of water every 3 to 4 days. Place water cans or buckets  around the yard when you water. As soon as you get ½ inch of water in can, stop watering and  remember how much time it took the sprinkler to put that much water out. Set your timer to only  give than much water every 3-4 days. You will have to water more frequently as it gets hotter in July  or August (every 2-3 days). Increasing the amount of water only washes through the soil. There are  also many water savings tips out online.

Water Usage Facts from https://www.networx.com/article/water-conservation-tips: 1. The average North American uses 50-70 gallons of water daily. That amount can double in summer,  with lawn and garden care, swimming pools, etc.

  1. Three-quarters of all indoor water usage is in the bathroom.
  2. In a typical North American home, the toilet accounts for about one-quarter of total water use. 4. Running a sprinkler for two hours can consume as much as 500 gallons of water. 5. Washing your driveway or sidewalk with a hose gobbles about 10 gallons per minute.
