April 2013

Dear Sugar City Residents:

                                     THINK SPRING!

FLOWER BARREL FUND:  The Beautification Committee is looking forward to a beautiful, wind and frost-free June with live flowers blooming in the barrels on Center Street.  We so appreciate your donations to fund this project.  Thank you for dropping off your contribution at the city hall.

WATERING:  Because of our warm March weather, we read the water meters the end of March.  This means you will see an adjustment to your water bill based on how good our winter estimate was.  This also means you can start watering those trees and flowers again.

RECYCLING:  Sugar Salem High School has three dumpsters for recycling – one each for paper, cardboard and plastic.  By recycling, we reduce the amount of waste taken to the dump.  We would encourage all of you to use this service.

ARBOR DAY:  Sugar City will hold an Arbor Day Celebration at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 26, at the new Welcome to Sugar City sign, by the south exit to U.S. 20.  Nine Kershaw students that won an Arbor Day art contest will be special guests and will have the opportunity to do some plantings.  We also will have a ribbon cutting for our beautiful sign at that time.

DOG LICENSES:  All dog licenses expired December 31st.  The licensing fee for each dog is $12 per year.  Penalties for an unlicensed dog start at $100.  Inside dogs also need to be licensed.

SPRING PICKUP:  Spring cleanup begins May 20.  We will start on the southwest corner of town and then move east, and then start on the north side of town on the west and move east.  Since it is expensive for the crews to backtrack, we will be unable to accommodate backtrack requests.  Due to regulations, please be reminded first, we cannot pick up leaves and grass clippings unless they are bagged.  Second, we cannot pick up large projects such as remodeling materials, roofing, large pieces of concrete, tires, paint, chemicals, batteries, and used oil.  Please cut tree limbs to ten-foot lengths or less.

Please remove all vehicles and trailers from the alleys and have everything ready for pickup by May 17.  Again, we are attempting to reduce the costs of citywide cleanup and we would appreciate your support so that we can continue this service.  The city has placed a dumpster on the west side of town just north of the old elevator which is available for spring cleanup debris.  Please, no household garbage.
