Important Sugar City Cemetery Update

The pump for the irrigation well at the Sugar City Cemetery along with the power line that  serves it needs to be replaced and other necessary repairs made at a cost of up to $50,000. More  than 50 years old and obsolete, the pump system is now beyond fixing and must be upgraded.

Without a working pump to supply irrigation water, the cemetery will turn into a large patch of  weeds.

The current cemetery budget comes from county taxes, which barely provide enough revenue to  pay the sexton to maintain the grounds. By law, the cemetery cannot raise its budget more than 3 percent a year, get loans, or go into debt.

In the past, the cemetery board applied for and received grants for expansion. Volunteers also  provided labor to beautify parts of our cemetery. This past year we have not been able to qualify  for additional grants.

We have asked the county for help, but commissioners directed us to seek other means of  support first. We have nowhere to turn but to our citizens and businesses.

To maintain the cemetery, the pump and electrical supply system must be in place before  Memorial Day. We must raise the money this April and May. Any contributions from our  community will show we are striving to do our part.

We welcome donations in any amount, which are tax deductible. You may deposit or mail checks (made out to Sugar Salem Moody Cemetery–with a note “for pump”) at Key Bank 110 E. Main Street, Rexburg, Idaho 83440, or mail or drop off donations to Sugar Salem Moody  Cemetery, 10 Jaxon Drive, Sugar City, Idaho, 83448.

Our cemetery is a vital part of our community and we desire to maintain it as a beautiful  sanctuary, where family members can visit, mediate, reflect and remember their deceased loved  ones.

Thank you, in advance, for any contributions you can afford to contribute. Sincerely,

Sugar Salem Moody Cemetery Board
