SUGAR DAYS CELEBRATION: The city had such good feedback from our Sugar Days Eclipse Celebration last year that we have decided to hold a yearly Sugar Days Celebration to be held on July 21st from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Heritage Park. We will be inviting vendors to sign up to join in the festivities, if you are interested please call City hall for more information. More information will be in future newsletters and on the city’s website and Facebook page.
GARBAGE PICKUP: Because of Memorial Day on Monday, May 28h, garbage pickup for that week will be Saturday, June 2nd.
ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION: As Sugar City is an official Tree City, USA, the Tree and Beautification Committee will be holding an Arbor Day Celebration on May 11th, 2017 at 11 a.m. near the gazebo in Heritage Park where a new tree will be planted. The public is welcome to attend.
SPRING CLEANUP: The city has set a date of May 21st to start spring cleanup. Please wait for city wide clean–up to put out garbage to help prevent the wind from blowing garbage around our city. To help those of you that would like to start your yard clean–up early, the dumpster on the west side of town just north of the old elevator is now available for use. Reminder: Household garbage is not allowed at the dumpster.
**HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION DATES**: Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day for Madison County residents is coming up on May 23rd (Wednesday) and 24th (Thursday). The collection will take place at the Madison County Transfer Station at 530 Airport Road in Rexburg from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m. For questions call 208-356-3102. This service is free of charge. The next collection dates are August 29th & 30th.
**REMINDER**: If you didn’t have a test on your sprinkler system backflow preventer done last year, please have one done this year and bring your report into City Hall. This is necessary to ensure that contamination of the water supply will not happen in the event of a pressure loss to the water system. Thank you to those that have already brought in test results!
REVERSE 911 SYSTEM: We would like to encourage all citizens to sign up for Reverse 911. Go to madisonsheriff.com under Alert Sense and it will take you to the page to subscribe for emergency notifications.
WATERING TIP: According to research from Utah State University in Logan, Utah, lawns don’t really require as much water as many of us are giving them. Lawns should receive 1⁄2 inch of water every 3 to 4 days. Place water cans or buckets around your yard when you water. As soon as you get 1⁄2 inch of water in your bucket or can, stop watering and remember how much time it took the sprinkler to put that much water out. Set your timer to only give that much water every 3 – 4 days. You will have to water more frequently as it gets hotter in July and August by watering every 2-3 days. Increasing the amount of water will not help; it will only wash through the soil.

May 1, 2018
Dear City Residents,
I am so excited for summer to come. I enjoy working out in the yard, having barbeques with family and friends, and having good projects to complete. I hope that your summer will be as pleasant.
We are excited to celebrate 15 years as a Tree City USA participant. The Arbor Day celebration will be held on Friday, May 11th, at 11:00am. There will be a speaker from Idaho Falls, to present an award from the Tree City USA group for 15 years of active participation. There is also an art contest held for students at Central Elementary school, with awards given to those that have participated. We will also be planting a 12–foot pine tree. The students will be asked to participate in the planting.
The city will also be participating in the Teton Dam Flood Run, which will be held on June 2nd this year. We will be manning several booths to provide help and refreshment to the runners. We are looking for volunteers to man those posts. If you would like to help, please contact Vaun Waddell or Wendy McLaughlin at the city.
I hope you will also put on your calendar for July 21st our second annual Sugar Days, beginning with the breakfast to be held at Heritage Park starting at 7:00am to 10:00am. There will be good food as usual. The St. Anthony parade will then start at 10:30am, with the Mayor and Council participating as they have in the past. We will then expand our normal activities with the same thing we did during the eclipse, with vendors and activities, especially those activities for the children. This part will begin at noon and go until 6:00pm. We hope this will become a great activity for the residents of Sugar city.
Thanks for your support. If you have questions, call city hall.
Sincerely,
K
David D. Ogden, Mayor
