Welcome to the City of Sugar City!

We are pleased to have you join our community. We know that when one is new to an area there can be many questions.  Sugar City Emergency Alerts: Be an informed citizen as to emergencies, snow removal, city meetings and other city events.

 Utility Billing: As a part of the sign-up process, it is required to include an email. The default for billing is Xpress Bill Pay e-billing. Please visit www.sugarcityidaho.gov to create an online account.

 Garbage:  Collected on Fridays. Please have your can out on the curb by 6 a.m. and allow at least 3 feet between the can and any other object, including other cans. When there is a major holiday during the week (six throughout the year), garbage pickup will be on Saturday. For a schedule see www.sugarcityidaho.gov “Helpful Links”.

 Dog Licenses Required: Only 2 dogs allowed. Dogs must be on leashes when out and cleaned up after at all times. City license fee is $25 per pet’s lifetime. There is a $50 fine for non-licensed dogs or dogs at large.  If you wish to have more than two dogs, a kennel license application is required along with approval of such license before acquiring more than two dogs. There is a 5-dog limit.

 Home and Commercial Business Licenses: Licenses are required yearly for commercial and home-based businesses.  Licenses expire on December 31st. Cost for home-based businesses is $20.00 and $50.00 for commercial businesses.

 Alleys: It is against city code to place any yard waste or other debris in the city alleys. Storing debris is a violation of City Code 3-1-13A.

Debris in alleys is an infraction with a fine of $150.00. You may not park vehicles, trailers, campers or RVs in alleys.

 Parking Ordinances: Please familiarize yourself with the city’s parking ordinances found on the city website at www.sugarcityidaho.gov under City Code 5-2-6 and 6-1-2. You cannot park on sidewalks ever or on roads between Dec. 1st and March 1st. There are time limits for parking trailers and campers on city roads. Inoperable vehicles are not allowed on roads.

 Snow Removal: Between December 1 and March 1, no vehicles, trailers, etc. shall be parked on any street or alley between 12 a.m. (midnight) and 7 a.m. to allow snow plows to clear streets and avoid any damage to vehicles. Pushing or blowing snow into streets when clearing sidewalks and driveways is not allowed.

 Building/Fence Permits: Building permits are required for fences, sheds, new construction and additions to existing homes.

 Sprinkler Systems: Backflow prevention tests are required every two years. The city must be notified by a certified tester of your backflow test. The test must be done on all sprinkler systems every other year, odd addresses on odd years and even addresses on even years. If your system does not have a backflow preventer, one must be installed.

 Parks: Parks are open on a first come, first served basis for casual use if they are not already reserved. Porta-potties are available during the summer months. Adult supervision of children is appreciated to maintain them. Dogs must be on leashes in parks and cleaned up after. If you wish to reserve a park, please call or come into City Hall to schedule. The rate is $30 per 4 hour block.

 Recreation: Sports such as basketball, cross country skiing, soccer, swimming lessons, and volleyball are available. Register online at www.rexburg.org/pages/rec or www.sugarcityidaho.gov  “Helpful Links” “Sports Registration”.  Sugar Soccer is also available on the city’s website.

 City Events: The city has several events during the year. There is an Easter Egg Hunt the Saturday before Easter, an Arbor Day Celebration in May, a Community Breakfast and Sugar Days Celebration during the summer, Treats in the Streets in October and Trunk or Treat at Heritage Park on Halloween and the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting the first Monday in December. The monthly newsletter online at www.sugarcityidaho.gov will inform you of any upcoming activities and special announcements. Be sure to read it each month.

 City Council Meetings: City council meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month. The public is welcome.

 Planning & Zoning Meetings: P&Z meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. The public is welcome.
